What Is a Sock Drive?

A sock drive is a community-powered effort to collect new, clean socks for people experiencing homelessness, one of the most urgently needed items for foot health and daily comfort. It’s simple, hands-on, and perfect for groups of any size. Kids can participate, entire schools can join in, and families, clubs, and workplaces can all rally together to make a real impact.

During a sock drive, participants bring in new socks and place them in a SPIN collection bin called a “Socks Box” (designated drop-off box). Schools often turn it into a fun challenge between classrooms or grade levels, while community groups and youth programs use it as a way to teach compassion and civic engagement.

Every pair collected goes directly to SPIN, where it’s distributed to shelters, outreach teams, and unhoused neighbors across Santa Cruz County.

How Groups Usually Run It

Most groups run their sock drive for one to two weeks. Each group receives a S.P.I.N. certificate showing how many pairs they collected.

Choose Your Dates

Select a start and end date that give your group time to participate. Schools often run drives for one to two weeks, while clubs or workplaces may choose shorter windows.

Set Up Your SOCKS BOX Locations

Place clearly labeled SOCKS BOX bins in high-traffic areas — classrooms, school offices, libraries, and community gathering areas.

Spread the Word

Promote your sock drive through newsletters, morning announcements, posters, or social media. Share why socks matter: they’re the number-one requested item among people experiencing homelessness.

Get Kids and Classrooms Involved

Encourage students to bring in new socks and make it fun: Classroom vs. classroom challenges Grade-level competitions “Crazy Sock Day” Entire schools can participate, turning the drive into a school-wide act of kindness.

Collect New, Clean Socks

Participants drop new socks into your Socks Box locations. Please donate new and unworn socks only. Used socks cannot be accepted. Original packaging is welcome, but not required.

Adult socks are most needed, but all sizes are welcome. Check boxes regularly so they stay tidy and inviting.

Not sure how many to collect? Aim for 100 pairs on your first drive, but every pair helps.

Count and Celebrate

When the drive ends, tally your total pairs. Kids especially love seeing how many people they helped.
Celebrate your group’s impact with a school announcement or a photo of your overflowing SOCKS BOX collection.

Schedule SPIN Pickup

Once your drive is complete, SPIN will come pick up the donated socks.
A team member will coordinate a pickup time that works for your school, workplace, or community group. You can also drop off the socks at a designated SPIN location if preferred.

Receive Your SPIN Certificate

Every participating group receives an official SPIN Certificate showing the number of pairs donated.
This certificate recognizes your effort, celebrates your impact, and can be proudly displayed in classrooms, offices, or community spaces.

Be Recognized as an Official SPIN Supporter

Your school, club, or organization will be featured on the SPIN website as an official supporter.
This public recognition highlights your commitment to helping unhoused neighbors and encourages others to join the mission.
