At S.P.I.N., every pair of socks is more than a gift, it’s a reminder that someone cares. Together with our amazing community of volunteers, donors, and partners, we’re making a measurable difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness and others in need.

Socks are the most requested item in homeless shelters and one of the least donated. That’s why S.P.I.N. exists.

Every number on this page started with someone choosing to help a stranger, whether by giving a few dollars or a few hours of their time.

Since 2014, thousands of donors, volunteers, and community partners have come together to put more than 100,000 pairs of new socks on the feet of people who needed them. Here’s what your support has helped us do.

The Problem We're Solving

According to the latest national HUD count, more than 770,000 people in the United States experience homelessness on any given night. For many people, walking isn’t a choice or exercise. It’s part of getting through the day.

They may walk miles between shelters, meal programs, clinics, and work, wearing shoes that don’t fit and socks worn far too long.

The problem isn’t just about discomfort. Damp, worn-out socks can cause blisters, fungal infections, frostbite, and untreated wounds. In some cases, a simple $3 pair of new socks could help prevent a problem that may require emergency medical care.

Shelters often receive plenty of coats and canned food, but socks don’t get donated as often. Most people throw old socks away instead of donating them, and few think to donate new ones. S.P.I.N. is working to change that.

Every pair you fund has a purpose. It goes onto someone’s feet, not onto a shelf.

Where the Socks Go

Donated socks don’t stay in storage. They go directly to people who need them. Each month, our volunteers sort and deliver socks through our network of 350+ community partners, including:

Emergency and overnight shelters: Fresh socks are handed out to people at check-in, and they’re one of the most requested items.
Street outreach teams: Reaching people who never make it to a shelter door.
Schools and family programs:x Helping children and families facing housing instability and needing essentials.
Veterans' services: Supporting those who served and now face housing insecurity.
Disaster and cold-weather response: Providing extra socks when freezing weather or emergencies occur in our region.
